Tunica Airport Completes Arrival/Departure Canopy
TUNICA,
Mississippi (July xx, 2005) —The Tunica Airport completed the
construction of its arrival and departure canopy earlier this month,
according to Cliff Nash, Tunica Airport executive director. The new
structure is the Mid-South’s largest cantilevered canopy.
The canopy
– which is 28 feet high, 90 feet long and 90 feet wide – provides
all-weather access for passengers and aircraft arriving at Tunica
Airport. The structure also provides improved lighting and security,
Nash said. Its construction accommodates a multitude of aircraft,
including G5s to B757s, and provides visitors with safer, immediate
access to facilities and transportation.
“The design
is very innovative for us,” he added. “Its cantilevered structure
complements the architecture of the Air
Center and immediately
shows arriving passengers that the Tunica Airport is
customer-friendly as well as high-tech.”
Earlier
this year, a CAT I Instrument Landing System (ILS), medium intensity
approach lights with runway approach indicator lights (MALSRS),
Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS III p/t) and Remote
Communications outlet (RCO) were installed, giving the airport
all-weather capability. Last fall, the airport’s runway was extended
to 7,000 feet. Approximately $33 million in expansions and upgrades
have been completed to date, Nash said.
The next
major project at the Tunica Airport will be the construction of a
20,000-square-foot hangar, which is expected to begin later this
summer.
Other
future plans include the construction of an air traffic control
tower, 320,000-square-foot commercial apron, expanded general
aviation aprons and a terminal building.
